Hey guys, I am selling my Bach Stradivarius 42BO tenor trombone. It is from the late-90's, serial number #13XXXX. The horn isn't the most beautiful thing cosmetically.There is extensive lacquer wear on the upper slide tube, as well as a large patch on the bell and one on the neckpipe. There are no serious dents, bell is square and looks good. There are a few small dings in the main slide crook, one in the F tuning slide, and one shallow dent approximately 1/4" in diameter about halfway up the bell. As we all know, lacquer wear in no way hampers playability, some even say it opens up the response of a horn but who knows. I do know, however, that this instrument plays very well. Nice and big like a Bach should sound. The inner slides are clean, bright and smooth. No wear issues here. Look almost factory fresh. Slide lock is smooth and functions fine. Slide action is smooth and pretty quick! I've found this slide loves Slide-O-Mix, but accepts Trombotine relatively well. I imagine after a chem-cleaning the slide will be fantastic. The rotary valve is one of the smoothest, shortest and quickest I've felt on a Bach. Excellent throw and response. The F tuning slide is a little stiff, but is workable as long as it is kept properly greased. I suspect a small amount of corrosion/buildup inside the outer sleeves to be the culprit - no visible dents in the outer or inner sleeves. Main tuning slide is excellent, no issues here. Aside from the stiff tuning slide I'd say this is a 9/10 functionally. At least as good as the last Bach I bought, which was new from the store I might add! Includes the original Bach hard case, a Bach large shank 6.5AL mouthpiece, a Bach small shank 6.5AL, original cleaning rod, as well as a lyre. This would make an EXCELLENT instrument for someone looking for a professional horn on a budget that doesn't mind the appearance. I don't, gives it some character... Or for a student stepping up to a large bore instrument! The instrument could stand a good chemical-cleaning, but I have cleaned it up very well from when I fetched it out of storage - everything is prepped, lubed, oiled, and ready to go! This horn is the much sought after T-15 Nickel Silver and Yellow Brass (two tone) Studio Tenor Trombone. It is pitched in B-flat, and is in immaculate condition. The horn has been completely refurbished to what we believe to be it's original factory specifications. It has also been sterilized. All work is fresh, having been completed in the last 10 days. All valves, springs and moving parts are in superb working order. Both tuning and playing slides work without hesitation. There are no creases at the seams. It has no dents, no dings, oops or owies! No wear or loss of plating, not a mark on the sleeves. Not even a scratch. The lacquer and nickel silver plating are 100%.The horn was manufactured at the Los Angeles, California Olds plant. (Serial number is 553xx) . The bell is nickle silver both inside and out, with a brass tone overlay added to the bell flare. This produces a resonant sound that is a little darker than the usual straight tenor. The bell is 8" wide, and the horn is .500 bore. The tuning slide crook moves with ease. The slide is very fast with excellent compression and allows the player to achieve remarkable slide vibrato with simple ease. The range of the horn is also remarkable. It handles both low and high tones very well and is one of the most responsive Studio's I have come across. It is an excellent horn for orchestra, symphonic band, jazz or small combo work. Both the inner and outer slide tubes have been replaced. The slide action is very, very good. The outer tube falls under its own weight when held a slight angle. It has very good compression. The horn has a very bright yet full sound that results in a "dark sound" normally associated with heavy bells, without the corresponding weight. It has a nickel silver tuning slide and bell with a yellow brass neck. The outer slides are brass, with chrome plated nickel silver inner slides. The lower bell and tuning slide are both nickel silver. This is a top-notch professional instrument. The horn comes with a refinished (sterilized) like-new and re-plated mouthpiece which retails for about $50. It is shipped in a used Conn light weight hard shell plastic trombone case, in good vintage condition externally, and excellent vintage condition inside. What is most unusual about this model Olds horn is the outer slides, which are drawn or plated with a special hard nickel silver brass alloy, while the inside slides are plated with a special hard nickel silver alloy with a durable chrome finish, closely fitted for smooth free action. The slide bow is nickel silver as are all braces. The tuning crook of the bell is also of nickel silver and the tuning slides are tapered in their inner bore to carry out an unbroken taper in the bell section, so that when the tuning slide is pulled out, there is a continuous contour. This is a Jazz horn. It has a beautiful dark and somber tone, and the abundance of nickel silver causes the notes in the lower registers to resonate. For a tenor trombone, it handles pedal tones excellently. This is a beautiful horn. Included is a brand new tenor trombone case. It has been THE symphonic trombone of choice for more professionals that any other model. If a pro is not playing a 42 at this point, odds are that they did at one point or another in their career. Bach Strad 42's project like no other, Even the custom makers making horns that cost twice as much offer their version of the classic Bach. It can power through the pedals and low register, warm the middle and soar into the upper register. The reason most choose this horn is because "it sounds like a Bach" F attachment has open wrapped tubing to allow the triggered notes to sound more like the non valved notes- a significant improvement when Bach introduced it. This is a very nice one obviously in great shape. There are no dents and the lacquer finish is probably about 98% intact. I do not think the original owner put a lot of time in practicing. It got a slide tune up at my techs shop. It is now fast free smooth and quiet. Valve works quickly and tuning slides work as well. Comes with the original case in overall good shape. The zipper does not zip the last couple inches but it works just fine to keep the case closed and protect the horn. It is in solid structural condition.
